Projektbeschreibung online

In the current context of Europe, marked by an increasing gap between center and periphery, the new Athenaeum Weimar shall become an institute devoted to the study and appreciation of the European periphery, establishing itself in the symbolic center of German culture. A reference to the Greek capital Athens, Athenaeum was originally a school in Imperial Rome where the children of the elite were taught according to Greek precepts of education. In the 18th century the term witnessed a revival when it started being employed to name an array of cultural institutions across Europe as a form of paying tribute to the cultural debt it owes to Greece. Despite its long tradition as a hub for the European literati, Weimar does not seem to ever have had an Athenaeum of its own. But being the quintessence of German culture, Weimar is today the perfect location to establish a new type of Athenaeum, one whose civilizing agenda shall not be at odds with times. While the institute undergoes definition and the space is being transformed, the doors shall remain closed and the windows covered at all times. Affixed to the window and visible from the outside, a statement will provide further information about the concept behind the institute and its agenda.
