Start-Up Scholarships for a Doctorate
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar would like to attract outstanding students and graduates of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to start a doctorate at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Students and alumni of all four faculties who are planning a doctoral project at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar can apply for a scholarship in the preparation phase.
In the funding year 2024/2025 are available:
- 4 Bauhaus Start-Up Scholarships
3 scholarships are awarded to alumni who are interested in doing a doctorate - Remaining: 1 Bauhaus Start Scholarship (please note: max. 5 months)
Funding: 1.000 Euros per month, funding duration 6 months
Opportunity to participate in doctoral preparation workshops
The funding period can be chosen anytime between 1st April 2024 und 31st March 2025.
Breaks are usually not possible.
- Only complete applications submitted on time will be accepted.
- An application can unfortunately not be considered without a letter of recommendation.
- There is no legal entitlement to the award of a scholarship.
- The first deadline for applications is has ended on 31st of January 2024.
- Applications are possible on an ongoing basis. The latest deadline is the 31st of August 2024, depending on the availability of scholarship funds during the ongoing award.
Scholarships 2024/25
January: The application deadline was 31st of January, 2024.
Feb/March: As a rule, the awarding committee for scholarships of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will select the scholarship holders in February/March.
August: Second application deadline for Bauhaus Degree Completion Scholarships for students on 31 August 2024
Further remaining or returned scholarships may also be awarded later.
- Applications will only be considered if they are complete and submitted before the application deadline.
- An application can not be considered without a letter of recommendation.
- There is no legal entitlement to the award of a scholarship.
Requirements
Eligible for funding are:
- Graduates of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar with very good study and examination results, special interest and aptitude for scientific work with outlines for doctoral projects that are foreseeably to be registered and carried out at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
Please note:
- As a rule, no more than 2 years may lie between the date of application and the date of graduation. The degree certificate must be available at the latest at the time of the scholarship application.
- The scholarship cannot be granted to employed persons. Secondary employment is possible within the framework of the regulations of the scholarship regulations of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
The start date of the scholarship is April 1 at the earliest and October 1 at the latest.
Accordingly, the last scholarship payment must be made no later than March 2025.
Following the scholarship, the scholarship holders are obliged to submit a final report and, if applicable, proof of acceptance by the respective Doctoral Candidate Admissions Board that has been applied for or has taken place in the meantime.

Please include the following documents in the order shown below:
- Letter of motivation (motivation for the doctorate and its location at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar)
- Exposé on the planned project (max. 3 pages + literature/source references + illustrations, if applicable)
- Time and work plan (for the funding period and beyond, if possible)
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- Degree certificate (Bachelor's degree, if available; Master's degree/diploma; certificate and overview of grades as scan)
- if applicable: an explanation of special personal circumstances and biographical hurdles such as caring for a child or relative, a disability or chronic illness, your parents' (educational) background, migration background, experience of discrimination, etc.

PLEASE NOTE - SEPERATE SUBMISSION BY THE PROFESSOR:
7. Statement by a professor of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar who will supervise the doctoral project.
- should include statements on the applicant as well as on the planned doctoral project and its integration in the department.
Please submit separately by the respective department online as a pdf. For better comparability, please use the "Letter of Recommendation Form" if possible and send it directly to the scholarship coordinator.
Selection process
The decision on the awarding of grants is taken by the Scholarship Commission at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, taking into account the following criteria:
- Suitability of the prospective doctoral candidates for academic work on a doctorate (outstanding academic achievements, if applicable: prizes/awards, publication or international experience)
- prospects of success: Originality of the idea and suitability of the project as a basis for a doctoral project (research question, objective, current state of research/theoretical basis, methodological approach if applicable)
- Work and time schedule for the preparation phase of the doctoral thesis, if applicable already for the doctoral project
- If applicable: Reference to the Bauhaus or the research focus of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar; importance of the doctoral project taking into account aspects of interdisciplinarity or internationality
- Social aspects, biographical hurdles and the individual potential of the applicants in their current life situation can be taken into account in the awarding process.
Attempts to deceive candidates will result in immediate exclusion from the procedure. In this case, a renewed application is excluded.
In view of the absolute confidentiality of the selection procedure, no reasons will be given to applicants for decisions by the commission.
The selection is subject to the availability of funds.
