After ten years, we »Rewind« and dedicate ourselves to the early stages of writing: How do I get into writing, be it alone or with others? What can go wrong with an academic paper? How do I prepare for the final presentation of my art project? What do I need to know before publishing my texts? How do I accurately describe my project for a funding application or an event catalogue? And how creatively do I actually write? This year's Night of Writing will be about both success and failure as an irreducible part of the writing process. As different as university disciplines may be, they almost all share writing as a cultural technique and articulation practice: writing takes place in many different ways at our university and in all areas of society.
Therefore, whether you are just starting to write or already have proven writing expertise, we invite all interested parties to the 10th Night of Writing at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to participate in various formats with the aim of mutual learning, collaborative writing, and discussions about diverse approaches.
Special guest: Nancy Hünger (Poet | Head of Studio Literature and Theatre at the University of Tübingen)
»Every application for third-party funding a grant? Unfortunately not. Every text a finished work? Far from it. Every attempt a success? That would be too easy.«
We want to celebrate the many different moments of 'failure' in researching, writing and publishing in this new format of the Writing Night 2024, and show that stumbling blocks and failures can also be an opportunity for development and new ideas.
We are looking for people from all areas of the University to tell their stories in short, entertaining and tongue-in-cheek presentations. Whether it's a research dead end, a design for the dustbin or a record-breaking procrastination, all stories of failure, big or small, are welcome!
The presentation will take place at the Night of Writing 2024 on the evening of 13 June 2024 at around 8pm in the University Library of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Each participant will have about 5 minutes. The story can be told in German or English, with or without a background presentation.
If you would like to present your story please register until 15 May 2024 by sending an email to research-school[at]uni-weimar.de
The presentations will be followed by an open workshop in which we will write our own personal (academic) CV of failure. More on this soon!
Various eLearning courses on the subject of writing are available for students and doctoral candidates of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar throughout the year.
Students, doctoral candidates and teachers will find tips and tutorials on (academic) writing, which can be used individually, as part of a writing group or in a seminar.
The Moodle course "Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten@Bauhaus" is accessible to students and doctoral candidates of all faculties and accompanies the process of writing a scientific paper with knowledge content, tips and interactive tasks. Additionally, the weekly online seminar "Bau Dir Deine Arbeit: Schreiben, Quellen, Stil - Einführung in das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten" (Building your work: writing, sources, style - introduction to scientific work) takes place every semester as a Bauhaus.Module.
The interdisciplinary eLearning course for doctoral candidates deals with the planning, organisation and documentation of research projects and provides information on labour law and copyright. It was designed by GRADE - the Graduate Academy of the Goethe University Frankfurt and can be used free of charge by doctoral candidates at the Bauhaus Universität Weimar.
