Infrastructure

Objective

The university experience is also a function of physical/virtual/social locations and spaces. the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar provides all of its members and affiliates with a broad range of quality physical infrastructure that supports experimentation and collaboration across disciplines and meets the demands of contemporary, sustainable design, construction and use.

Aim

The infrastructure at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar reflects the contemporary demands for a space to carry out research, teach, work, experiment and exchange.

To achieve by 2026

1. Classrooms and Event Spaces

One of the central effects of the coronavirus pandemic was the recognition that the university experience is primarily shaped by real-life collaboration.  In reaction to this, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has been increasing its efforts to establish more physical and social meeting spaces for both formal and informal collaboration moments in professional and interdisciplinary settings. In addition to allocating new physical spaces as part of campus development, the existing spaces will be optimised through efficient and individualised use and access concepts.

2023 Milestones:

  •  Update the Campus Development Plan
  •  Design a concept for the integrated use of the BA 1c and 1d construction sites on the main campus
  •  Trial run of a digital room reservation system for classrooms and event spaces
  •  Technical equipment in classrooms

2. Workshops and Labs

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has relied on a culture of cooperative, practical »making« since its beginnings in a deliberate analogy to the historic Bauhaus. To support this culture, it is essential that workshops and labs are available and accessible to all of the University’s members. This is a big part of what makes studying and carrying out research in Weimar so appealing.

2023 Milestones:

  • Initiate the acquisition of the »Ackerbürgerscheunen«
  • Design a plan for a University-wide workshop concept

3. University Library

The structures of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Library offer a lot of potential. We want to make use of this and develop a modern, lively centre for knowledge production and reflection. The Library’s location directly in the city centre, and the fact that it is frequently visited by the public, makes it a natural place for University members to meet with one another and with citizens from Weimar and the surrounding area.

2023 Milestones:

  • Design specific meeting spaces within the Library
  • Establish a security concept for the Library and surrounding area
