In 2017, Canada celebrates 150 years of "nationhood". The city of Ottawa is tasked with holding a full calendar year's worth of activities and celebrations. Millions of dollars have been spent on projecting feelings of optimism, patriotism, pride, and national unity. But the boundless cheer of these celebrations fails to address this land's history prior to European settlement and the dark past of colonialism, as well as the future of an environmentally damaged country. Canada is known for its nature, and nature is a theme central to many of the Canada 150 celebrations, but the Canadian climate, wilderness, and ecosystems are rapidly being lost. Created specifically for the City of Ottawa's Canada 150 celebrations, Ottawa 3017 imagines a very different landmark in time for the city. Rooted in the past and the future, rather than an obsession with the present, Ottawa 3017 leaves the character of the city in the hands of the player. Decide what a livable community looks like to you. The artist would like to acknowledge the financial support of the City of Ottawa and the Youth in Culture Pilot Program.
