Project description online
The thesis deals with the left behind real estate of a former U.S. military garrison in the small Franconian town of Schweinfurt, Germany.
With the means of photography an artistic-documentary work was created.
"For nearly 70 years the U.S. Army maintained a base in Schweinfurt. About 11,000 people left the area within the pull-out in 2014. Living in the City was permanently characterized by the american influence. Not only the military vehicles on the streets or the high fences, but also the english language and the american way of life made that omnipresence particularly tangible. The "U.S. Army Military Garrison Schweinfurt" was created on the sites of the former Nazi tank and airforce bases. Over the decades more ares were established and new buildings constructed. Within the pull-out all of those extensive areas, with intact development, were left behind.
A temporary ghost town without the romance of decay; where empty buildings harbour an army without soldiers.
Training areas on which only the hunter's shot is able to break the silence.
The American came as winner, stayed as occupant and left as a friend.
A friend who you never really knew."
